Fantastically Twisted Obsessions

Craig Bruyn
I'm back! My apologies for taking so long to put this post out. Life sometimes gets in the way and other things take priority.  After my last post, My Steampunk Romance, I found lots of  reading materials, anime and comics that relate back to my romantic interest of steampunk. Thanks to my friend Kasi for sending me information on  a few of these topics.  You rock girl!

As an avid cartoon/anime fan, I'm always looking for new things to read or view. On Sunday nights I get an Adult Swim fix starting with Robot Chicken. Never thought that Full Metal Alchemist was related to Steampunk, but after watching an episode, it clicked, Oh yeah! I can see why this would fit into that genre.  I've discovered a few other anime films of interest that I thought would be great to share. Must continue to broaden my horizons. So, come with me to explore some anime, along with the books, nooks and crannies of my twisted obsessions.

BOOKS

Recently, I found a few new(new to me) authors to sink my teeth into. Promised myself that I would read at least 5 books this year. It may exceed that now that I've found something of interest. Love sharing my fascination with the macob, the weird and the supernatural. Making new discoveries in my areas of interest excites me, makes me want to explore more and find out what I've been missing, then I share it with you!

This first author is amazing. I just finished reading her book and I follow her on Facebook. Can't wait until the next book is available in Paperback.  I know, with Nook and e-reader, paperbacks are becoming a thing of the past, but I prefer to dog ear my pages and have something tangible with a visual element (cover).

Risen
Elizabeth Watasin

It is 1880 in a mechanical and supernatural London.  Agents of Prince Albert's Secret commission, their criminal pasts wiped from their memories, are resurrected to fight the eldritch evils that threaten England. Amidst this turmoil, Jim Dastard and his new partner Artifice must stop a re-animationist raising murderous dead children.  As Art and Jim pursue their quarry, Art discovers clues about her past self, and through meeting various intriguing women- a journalist, a medium, a prostitute, and a mysterious woman in black- where her heart lies.  Yet the question remains: What sort of criminal was she? A new beginning, a new identity, and new dangers wait Art as she fights for the Secret Commission.

In a mechanical and eldritch Victorian London, Secret Commission agents Artifice, the artificial ghost, and Jim Dastard, the animated skull, must stop a black arts surgeon from ripping out the bones of the poor to transplant into the wealthy.

Elizabeth has worked on 13 animated feature films, including Beauty & The Beast and The Princess And The Frog. She wrote for Disney Adventures magazine and her graphic novel Charm School is published by SLG Publishing. She lives with a black cat named Draw in a tree house in Los Angeles. She's currently working on her storybook Fey Dently, Vampyre, A YA adventure novel, Wit's World: Never Was, and the Gothic steampunk series, The Dark Victorian.

Doktor Glass

In an age of Zeppelins and gyroplanes, atomics and horseless carriages, the Transatlantic Span is the industrial marvel of the nineteenth century. A monumental feat of engineering, the steel suspension bridge stretches across the Atlantic from Liverpool to the distant harbor of New York City, supported by no less than seven hundred towers. But in the shadows of its massive struts, on the docks of the River Mersey, lies a faceless corpse…

Inspector Matthew Langton is still seized with grief when he thinks of Sarah, his late wife. Tortured by nightmares and afflicted by breathless attacks of despair and terror, he forces himself to focus on the investigation of the faceless man. The victim wears the uniform of the Transatlantic Span Company but bears the tattoos of the Boers—could there be a Boer conspiracy to assassinate Queen Victoria on the upcoming Inauguration Day of the Span?

But the truth, as it begins to emerge, is far more bizarre than a political coup. As additional victims turn up—each with strange, twin burn marks on their necks—Langton draws a connection between the dead man beneath the bridge and chilling rumors of the Jar Bars, soul snatchers who come under cover of night. Most frightening of all is the mythic and elusive Doktor Glass, who may not only be behind the illicit trade in souls…but who may hold the key to what happened to the inspector’s own beloved wife on her deathbed…

Girl Genius
Girl Genius is an ongoing adventure story in which the characters grow, change, run around the landscape quite a bit, and occasionally even die. Because of this, we recommend that new readers start the Girl Genius story from the very beginning.  Love this online comic. It has steampunk elements, and a great story line.  Nothing like a woman mad scientist. check it out at girlgeniusonlinecomic.com.

Last Kiss

Pairing vintage comic art with hilarious, new dialog by Disney veteran writer John Lustig, Last Kiss revels in the absurdities of love, lust and ‘life with lip.’

The series originated when Lustig bought the publishing rights to a romance comic book series from the 50′s and 60′s, and started rewriting the stories for fun. Since then, the re-dialogued comics have been a popular feature in newspapers, magazines, comic books and greeting cards.

Today Last Kiss is gaining popularity and is also available on e-cards from JibJab.com and greeting cards (late 2009)from NobleWorks.  Check www.lastkissinc.com for the latest comic, news and product.

I wanted to include Last Kiss because there is nothing like humor, with our without steampunk elements, a good laugh is good for the soul.  I enjoy having last kiss in my news feed on Facebook. It also reminds me of the sci-fi of the early 50"s and 60's and I dig their comedic take on some of the obvious.

Anime

Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no Renkinjutsushi?, literally "Alchemist of Steel") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa. The world of Fullmetal Alchemist is styled after the European Industrial Revolution. Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man, the story follows the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who want to restore their bodies after a disastrous failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.

The manga was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine (starting August 2001 and ending June 2010) and was collected in 27 tankōbon volumes. It was loosely adapted into an animated television series of 51 episodes by Bones from October 4, 2003, to October 2, 2004, later followed by a film sequel that concluded the story of the anime. Fullmetal Alchemist would later spawn a second series called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which directly adapted the manga. Brotherhood first premiered in Japan on April 5, 2009, spanning 64 episodes, and ending on July 4, 2010. A multitude of spin-off novels, original video animations (OVAs), drama CDs, soundtracks, and video games have been adapted from the series. A collectible card game, multiple supplementary books, and a variety of action figures and other merchandise based on the characters of the series have also been released.

Steamboy
Steamboy (スチームボーイ Suchīmubōi?) is a 2004 Japanese steampunk animated film produced by Sunrise, directed and co-written by Katsuhiro Otomo, his second major anime release, following Akira. The film was released in Japan on July 17, 2004. Steamboy is one of the most expensive full length Japanese animated movies made to date. Additionally, the film was in production for ten years and utilized more than 180,000 drawings and 440 CG cuts.

In 1863, where an alternate nineteenth century Europe has made tremendous strides in steampunk-themed technologies, scientist Lloyd Steam and his son Edward have succeeded, after a lengthy expedition, in discovering a pure mineral water. They believe the water can be harnessed as an ultimate power source for steam engines (the main industrial engine of the time). An experiment in Russian Alaska goes terribly wrong, with Edward being engulfed in freezing gases, but results in the creation of a strange spherical apparatus.

Akira
Akira (アキラ?, [akiɽa]) is a 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk action film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto, and featuring the voices of Mitsuo Iwata, Nozomu Sasaki, Mami Koyama and Taro Ishida. The screenplay is based on Otomo's manga Akira, focusing mainly on the first half of the story.

The film depicts a dystopian version of the city of Tokyo in the year 2019, with cyberpunk tones. The plot focuses on teenage biker Tetsuo Shima (Nozomu Sasaki) and his psychic powers, and the leader of his biker gang, Shotaro Kaneda (Mitsuo Iwata). Kaneda tries to prevent Tetsuo from releasing the imprisoned psychic Akira. While most of the character designs and settings were adapted from the original 2182-page manga epic, the restructured plot of the movie differs considerably from the print version, pruning much of the last half of the manga. The film became a hugely popular cult film and is widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation.

I have watched Full Metal Alchemist, and Steamboy both are interesting and full of action and suspense.  Akira is next on the list. I am both excited and interested to view something new and expand my knowledge on the things that interest me.

For some reason the macob, the strange or odd have been a long standing interest of mine. Always thought I was totally weird and it's always been there but until recently, I've never felt comfortable with sharing it with others, until now...

Everything is everything, and as I broaden my horizons and expand my interests, my goal is to share those wonderful and fascinating things that many may overlook. For a long time I have hidden a lot of things that I like for the fear that no one would understand, such as taxidermy, sculls and bones of creatures that I find.  We have a lot of stray cats in the neighborhood and so bones are often left around. Coming to the realization that I can live life creatively and openly is enlightenment all it's own. Especially, when conforming to get ahead has been at the forefront of my existence. Living and accepting my reality, exploring my world in a new light and perspective have all taken presidence over past realities which no longer apply.

goggles

My journey has just begun; to explore strange new worlds, to boldly go where no woman has gone before. Come with me and we will explore art in its oddest forms. Fashion, music, books, anywhere the imagination can take us.
This is not all about steampunk, but yet it is a catalyst to other realms. My eyes are open, ready to see through new goggles what's out there. Let's take a look together!

Mechanical imagery is always intriguing and I love the colors and intricate detail afforded to me in the artwork. Exploring artists, writers and performers in genres that may not be popular, what a way to go! It's the Oddities that are so spectacular.

Come visit StoneWomynArt on my Facebook page to see what I'm doing.  I will still post work in my sidebar, so please take a moment to check out what's happening with my art. Perhaps the influence will send my artwork in another direction. Right now, I'm exploring reliefs again, along with some armature ideas. As my life changes, my work will change, and so must I.

Thanks for reading my blog.  See you next time at the....
